Our tour will commence with a short drive of Myrina, (also called Kastro), the capital and the port on the west coast, with its five thousand inhabitants.
It’s pleasant enough, if not especially picturesque apart from a core neighborhood of old stone houses dating from the Ottoman occupation. Few explicitly Turkish monuments have survived - there’s no mosque, for example though a fountain at the harbor end of Kidha retains its inscription and is still highly prized for its drinking water. Myrina is fairly large for an island town, it’s a beautiful city situated on both sides of a huge rocky hill where the “Kastro” (castle) is located.
The “Kastro” dominates the city. It consists of the ruins of two forts, the Pelasgian and the Venetian.
The rocks on which the fort was built on are very high from the sea level and this made it very impenetrable by the privates. On the N.W. side of the fort we can see ruins of houses graved on the rocks which belong the Neolithic Era. It’s worth climbing at sunset for views over the town, the entire west coast and in exceptional conditions – over to Mount ‘Athos, 35 nautical west.
The archaeological museum of Lemnos was founded on the 20th of April 1961, in a tree store building, which is located in “Romeiko Gialo”.
This neoclassical building was recently renovated. Objects discovered during the excavations by the
Italian Archaeological School and by K’ Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities are exhibited here.
Along the “Romeikos Gialos” one can see the Metropolitan Mansion and the Pre-historic archaeological site of Myrina.
