Kotsinas was first a small commercial port that belonged to Hephaistia. The port was big and safe. In time, Kotsinas has become an important commercial center. The new settlement became big and soon was fortified as a castle, probably by Venetians to be protected from the pirates. In 1478 the Turks tried to capture and destroy the «Kastro» of kotsinas and they almost succeeded. At last moment when a local young woman named «Maroula»
saw her father, dead, had grabbed his sword and attack revived the morale and courage of her compatriots who then fought violently against the enemy. Finally the enemy left the island. Maroula became a legend in all the island and a symbol of Freedom. The statue of Maroula is found in Kotsinas on the place where the «Kastro» used to be. The statue shows Maroula holding a sword, in raised hand.Next to the statue, there is the church and a catacomb, fifty seven stoned steps lead down to a spring, that was supplying water to the Kastro in the ancient times. Now it is believed, the water is holy.Next destination is the temple of Kaberoi. The temple of Kaberoi was found on
Chloi Cape, close to Hephaistia, by the Italian Archeological School of Athens in 1937-39. The excavations have been continued since 1982.In Lemnos and Samothrace, we find the most convincing proofs of Kaveirous
religion. They believed that Kaveiroi were ancestors of the human race and also that they were the first navigators which planned their kindness towards sailor.Ceremonies in favour of Kaveiroi called Kaveirian mysteries were taking place in Lemnos.
